# Customizing Checkout Fields

# 🛒 Add Custom Checkout Fields in Fleetwire!

Want to collect more info from your customers at checkout? **Fleetwire** lets you create custom checkout fields to gather additional data, like “How did you hear about us?” or “Insurance policy number.” You can even use these fields as e-sign variables to auto-fill rental agreements, making your process smoother and more personalized. Let’s set up your custom fields and enhance your checkout experience!

## 🎯 Why Use Custom Checkout Fields?

Custom checkout fields in Fleetwire help you:

* **Gather Key Info**: Collect specific data from customers, like marketing insights or insurance details.
* **Enhance E-Sign Documents**: Use field data as variables to auto-fill rental agreements.
* **Improve Customer Experience**: Tailor the checkout process to your business needs.
* **Stay Organized**: Store all customer data in one place for easy access in your [Orders dashboard](https://tenant.fleetwire.io/orders/).

|| **Note**: Fleetwire’s default checkout fields include **First Name**, **Last Name**, **Phone**, and **Date of Birth (DOB)**, as shown below. Custom fields add to these defaults.

## 🛠 How to Set Up Custom Checkout Fields

Follow these steps to create and attach custom checkout fields in Fleetwire, and use them in your e-sign templates.

### Step 1: Access Checkout Settings

1. In your Fleetwire dashboard, go to [Settings > Checkout](https://tenant.fleetwire.io/settings/checkout).
2. Look for the **Custom Fields** section to start adding your fields.

| **Pro Tip**: Custom fields apply to all checkouts in your [Fleetwire-hosted shop](https://yourcompany.fleetwire.io), so choose fields that are relevant for most customers.
---

### Step 2: Create a Custom Checkout Field

1. In the Custom Fields section, click **Add New Field**.
2. Configure the field:
* **Field Name**: Internal name for reference (e.g., `HowDidYouHearAboutUs` or `InsurancePolicyNumber`).
* **Label**: What customers see at checkout (e.g., `How did you hear about us?` or `Insurance Policy Number`).
* **Type**: Choose the field type (e.g., `Text` for free-form input, `Dropdown` for predefined options like “Google,” “Referral,” etc.).
* **Required**: Toggle to make the field mandatory or optional.
3. Click **Save** to add the field to your checkout form.

| **Quick Tip**: Make fields like “Insurance Policy Number” required to ensure you have critical data, but keep fields like “How did you hear about us?” optional to avoid checkout friction.
---

### Step 3: Use Custom Fields in E-Sign Templates

Custom checkout fields can be used as variables in your e-sign templates to auto-fill rental agreements.

1. Go to [Documents > Templates](https://tenant.fleetwire.io/documents) to edit or create an e-sign template.
2. In the drag-and-drop editor, add a field and select your custom checkout field as a variable (e.g., `{{HowDidYouHearAboutUs}}` or `{{InsurancePolicyNumber}}`).
3. Save the template and assign it to your company branch or listing, as described in [Using Fleetwire eSign to Streamline Rental Agreements](/en/article/setting-up-e-signature-fields-q9oeuf/).
4. During checkout, the customer’s input will auto-fill into the agreement.

| **Pro Tip**: Test your e-sign template with a sample order to ensure custom field data (e.g., an insurance policy number entered on May 14, 2025, at 06:21 PM EDT) populates correctly.
---

### Step 4: Test the Checkout Process

1. Visit your [Fleetwire-hosted shop](https://tenant.fleetwire.io/dashboard) or create a test order in [Orders](https://tenant.fleetwire.io/orders/).
2. At checkout, verify that the new custom field (e.g., `How did you hear about us?`) appears alongside the default fields (First Name, Last Name, Phone, DOB).
3. Complete the checkout to ensure the data is saved and, if linked to an e-sign template, auto-filled into the agreement.

||| **Warning**: If a custom field is set as required but not filled, the customer won’t be able to check out. Monitor your checkout process to ensure fields aren’t blocking conversions.
